Professional Bio
Avani Vimawala, MHA, LMHCA, NCC, RPSGT, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in Washington who integrates neuroscience-informed therapy, sleep medicine, trauma-responsive care, and relational approaches. With more than 20 years of healthcare experience, she brings a broad understanding of the ways physical health, sleep, stress, culture, and relationships can influence mental wellbeing.
Avani works with adults, couples, and families navigating insomnia, trauma, burnout, relationship concerns, life transitions, health-related anxiety, cultural identity, immigration stress, and intergenerational family dynamics. Her approach draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, Polyvagal-informed therapy, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and Relational-Cultural Therapy.
As an immigrant, Avani understands that healing can be complicated by the experience of living between cultures. Family loyalty, collective values, migration, identity, belonging, and expectations may all shape how distress is experienced and expressed. She offers therapy in English, Gujarati, and Hindi and seeks to create a space where clients do not have to separate their cultural identity from their therapeutic work.
Avani's style is warm, collaborative, and educational. She helps clients understand the patterns underlying their concerns, develop practical strategies, and build a more compassionate relationship with themselves. Her goal is not to position herself as the authority on a client's life, but to bring clinical knowledge into a respectful partnership that supports each person's own wisdom and values.
Why I Do This Work
Fragmented Care Is Not Whole-Person Care
My path to counseling began in healthcare and sleep medicine, where I saw how deeply sleep, stress, physical health, and emotional wellbeing affect one another. I also saw that people often receive fragmented care: one concern is treated medically, another behaviorally, and another emotionally, even when they are part of the same lived experience.
I became drawn to approaches that connect the brain, body, relationships, and culture. I wanted to offer a space where clients could understand not only what they were feeling, but why certain patterns developed and what could help create meaningful change.
My immigrant experience also informs my work. I understand that people may carry multiple worlds within them — personal values, family responsibilities, cultural traditions, professional demands, and the need to belong. Therapy can become a place where these parts are explored with respect rather than treated as contradictions.
